Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to contest specific rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
