The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
